Moving off of Medium
Hello to the small handful of people who follow me here, as well as anyone checking my profile in the future. Thanks for reading my writing on Medium. Moving forward, I won’t be posting here. I don’t currently plan on deleting my existing posts or anything like that, but they’re now mirrored on my new blog, the “Ponett Gazette,” where I’ve also gathered other things I’ve written elsewhere. I’ve even made a tag for my posts that were originally on Medium, so you can easily find them all in one place.
Why am I leaving Medium, though? Well, I was never particularly attached to this site in the first place. It was a means to an end, and that end was having a place to share my longform writing that was easier on the eyes than my Tumblr blog. Over time, though, Medium has made more and more changes that have annoyed me, universally altering the formatting of posts in ways I can’t control. I’ve also never liked the highlight system, which means anything I write that gets a decent amount of traction becomes permanently slathered in highlights I can’t easily turn off, particularly tiny accidental highlights that people forget to undo. This year Medium has also began mysteriously losing entire paragraphs of my posts! They’ll be there in the editor, and then sometime after I set them live they’ll disappear. This happened to one of my favorite paragraphs on my Hazbin Hotel review earlier this year, actually! I don’t like having to babysit my posts to keep them from getting fucked up like this.
Also this site is just full of tech bro hacks writing about crypto and AI and whatnot, and wannabe self-help gurus, and all sorts of other nonsense. It sucks here lol
And so I’ve finally just made my own damn blog, set up using the free software Publii and hosted as part of the Neocities site I already had. I’ve also used it as an opportunity to gather some of my other writing from sites like Tumblr and Cohost, to save it all in one neatly organized place. (Cohost’s imminent demise and my need to archive some things I wrote there was, in fact, the main thing that finally pushed me to get this set up. RIP Cohost, you were too good for this world.) Moving forward, this new blog will be the central home for my more formal writing. And I’ve already got two new pieces going up in the near future! One’s about a bunch of comics I’ve been enjoying recently, and the other will be a ranking of my top 10 favorite games in the recently released UFO 50.
So, yes, if you’ve liked my writing here over the years, please consider reading it at its new home, the Ponett Gazette, at its very good URL ponett.dog/blog. Bookmark it! Save the RSS feed! Leave a comment! It has comments!
